| 1709 | Estil Glen Parks, 88, of Waynesville, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. You may have known him as Estil, Papaw, Big E, Flo, or one of the many other nicknames he acquired over the years of raising children, grandchildren, and countless Warren County 4-Hers. Whatever you called him, if you knew him, you were lucky to have him in your life. He was the son of Thurston and Gladys Parks of Dayton, who preceded him in death and helped ignite his lifelong love of fast cars and Darryl Waltrip. That love of cars also introduced him to the love of his life, Carole Elizabeth, who lived down the street from the filling station where he worked and proudly talked about having the hottest car around. What started there became a love story that lasted both their lifetimes and a marriage spanning 65 years. Together, Estil and Carole raised three children: Charles B. (Kym), Robert G. (Marla), and Pamela E. (Wayne Kibler). Estil and Carole dedicated many years to serving Warren County 4-H, raising livestock projects for countless members as well as their own children and grandchildren. Estil was always found ringside, usually offering advice on how things could be done better, though in later years he was just as happy to sit back and enjoy the show, whether in person or, right up until his final days, watching from his tablet. His love of unique cars created stories the family will tell forever, but none more memorable than the purple-and-black lowered dually that turned heads every time he rolled into stock show. It hardly felt like a weekend unless he was watching NASCAR, baling hay, working in the garden, or finding yet another way to make his family shake their heads at his mechanical skills or the latest deal he had made. Estil was the quiet voice of the family. He did not need to be the loudest person in the room to leave an impression. His steady presence, laugh, and advice will be deeply missed by so many, especially his grandchildren: Thomas (Mackenzie Harris), Terry Joel (Cassandra Lueking), Cassandra, Samantha, Katlynn, Addison, and Kourtney Parks; Lindsay and Chelsea Shell; and Cheyenne Crowe and Austin Kibler. He is also survived by two great-granddaughters, Avery Parks and Isabella Crowe. The family has planned a Celebration of Life for Estil and Carole on Sunday, May 31, from Noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Caesarcreek Township Picnic Shelter, 2034 E. Spring Valley Paintersville Rd., Xenia, Ohio 45385. | Parks, Estil Glen (I3057)

| 1717 | From photocopy of newspaper article of unknown date (probably before Nov 1983),by Bonnie Bare, probably from Chattanooga Free-Press: All of the information on this page was provided by Della Alley, who is the daughter of the late W. A. Smith, Sheriff of Rhea County from 1896-1898. Ms. Alley said, "Dad only served one term as Sheriff of Rhea County because of a fall he took the day before the election in 1896 and it was quite a while before he could take his position as Sheriff." While taking [sic] with us Ms. Alley recalled many stories her father told her when she was a child. She cited, "The only man ever to be sentenced to be hung in Rhea County was during dad's term as Sheriff.["] W. A. Smith, talked with Jack Stewart from the Chattanooga Free Press in September of 1941 and recalled to Mr. Stewart some of the events that happened during his term as Sheriff. "Things were not so dull those days, though," the former Sheriff said. "We had 19 murder cases on the docket at one term of court here, which is the most, I reckon, Rhea County's ever had. There were 13 saloons in Dayton and five in Spring City, and it was no work at all if we didn't arrest at least 40 drunks in one day." He was elected on a Republican ticket which, he said, is "about the only thing that hasn't changed since I was totin' the badge." Smith was elected for one term, from 1896-1898, during the presidential administration of Grover Cleveland and William McKinley, "and we had our war troubles back then, same as now." "The first telephone at the jail was put in while W. A. Smith was Sheriff, and the Sheriff was scared to use it for several days. He made me do all the calling." John Vaughn, who was W. A. Smith's deputy and 'sidekick' at the time, told the Chattanooga Free-Press in 1941. Reprint from Chattanooga News-Free Press dated August 11, 1968 by Marcia Cummings: Milo Trentham, a native of Rhea County has lived in Chattanooga for the last 30 years. But a 70-year-old sketch of Rhea County Courthouse, the site of the famous Scope's trail [sic], vividly returned his thoughts to stories from a time when Dayton had probably not yet heard of Charles Darwin or the "Origin of Species." The stories where [sic] told to him by his grandfather, W. A. Smith who was sheriff of Rhea County for several years around the turn of the century. Mr. Trentham was reminded of one particular story by an aged, yellowing drawing he ran across recently. The drawing was done in 1898. In 1898, Trentham's grandfather, called "Uncle Add" by many, pursued a fugitive into the mountains near Monterey on horseback, apprehended the criminal, brought him back to Dayton and placed him in the jail across the street from the courthouse. The prisoner's window presented him to [sic] clear view of the courthouse which stands today as it was in 1898. Perhaps an aspiring artist or simply a bored man with a knack for accurately rendering the world around him, the imprisoned man drew a surprisingly realistic sketch of the future site of the "Monkey Trails [sic]." The prisoner gave his finished sketch to one of "Uncle Add's" daughters who later became Milo Trentham's mother. Mrs. Trentham kept the sketch, finally passing it into the hands of her son. Mr. Trentham said the sketch "looks about the way I remember the courthouse." The courthouse is today very much as it was in 1898 soon after its construction. Several years ago there was some discussion about rebuilding or remodeling parts of the courthouse. Appartently [sic] due to the objection of some that the courthouse is in some ways a historical landmark it was decided to renovate only the first and second floors. Another interesting incident that Trentham remembers his grandfather recounting concerns his first race for sheriff's office. The evening before the election day Smith went into Dayton. Returning home, he rode the train from Dayton to Pennine Station near his house. With the purpose of walking the remaining distance, he got off the train and started out on foot. Before he got far, he fell into an unseen hole in the dark and broke his ankle. "Uncle Add" had to be carried home and put to bed. He was unable to get to Dayton for the election the next day but was elected in spite of his absence. It appears that Milo Trentham's grandfather, like the Rhea County Courthouse, has had an interesting "untold" history. | Smith, William Addison (I301)

The Bible records list Jim and Julian and other siblings. Their father is listed as "Jacin" Jason Gunter and mother as Mary Nelson. After more research, Jim's death certificate list father as Jason and mother as Mary Plemons. Jason died before 1880 and Mary's second husband was Thomas Nelson. In 1880 monroe co census, Mary Gunter (widow)is listed with sons James, Julian, and Hugh. Mary died in 1930. Mary's death records show her parents as John Plemons and Polly. | 1743 | http://www.al.com/news/huntsvilletimes/index.ssf?/xml/story.ssf/html_standard.xsl?/base/news/103245933535361.xml The Huntsville Times Wreck kills UAH assistant coach Crash ends recruiting trip for women's team; head coach is injured 09/19/02 By DARRELL PONDER For The Times dlpndr@cs.com Lindsay Floyd had been promoted to assistant women's basketball coach this summer at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and was looking forward to marrying another assistant coach at the university. But Floyd, 23, was killed and head women's basketball coach Andy Blackston was injured in a recruiting trip to West Memphis, Ark., Wednesday when their car wrecked shortly after 1 p.m. on U.S. 72 East near Corinth, Miss. ''Lindsay Floyd was a special, special person," UAH basketball coach Lennie Acuff said Wednesday. "We're just so sorry for her family." Floyd was recently engaged to UAH assistant men's basketball coach Mark Price. ''She was a very good player here, but more than that, a good person," Acuff said. "We're sorry for Mark, and their families will be in our prayers along with Andy and his family." Blackston, 28, is entering his second season as head women's basketball coach at UAH. Corinth Police Chief Fred Johnson told the Daily Corinthian that Blackston may have dozed off before the 1:10 p.m. wreck on U.S. 72 east of Corinth. "His vehicle veered to the right of the highway and it appears he over-corrected," Johnson said. "Once he did, the car went into a spin, turned backward and struck the rear tandem wheels of the 18-wheeler on the car's passenger side." The rear wheels then went over the car, he said, trapping Blackston and Floyd. Blackston was treated Wednesday at Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth with broken ribs, arm injuries and cuts. A UAH athletic department spokesman said this morning that he had been released from the hospital. The truck driver, Patrick Turner, 37, of Russell Springs, Ky., was not injured. Floyd was ''a wonderful young woman,'' said UAH President Frank Franz. ''We are very concerned about Andy Blackston and hoping for a full recovery from his injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families in this, their time of trial.'' ''This is a tragedy that the family and the team will have to have time to work through," UAH athletic director Jim Harris said. "We will do our part to help them get through this.'' The volleyball match between UAH and the University of Montevallo, scheduled for Friday night at Spragins Hall, has been postponed; no makeup date has been set. The funeral for Floyd will be Friday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Sparta, Tenn. Visitation will be tonight from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the same church. Floyd was a graduate assistant coach at UAH during the 2001-02 season and was promoted to assistant coach this summer. She graduated in 1997 from White County High School in Sparta, after lettering in basketball and volleyball. She also lettered two seasons at Roane State Community College in Harriman, Tenn. She transferred to UAH in 1999 and played for the Lady Chargers from 1999 through 2001. http://www.spartaexpositor.com/obituariesdetail.asp?search=floyd&image.x=21&image.y=9&ArticleID=487 Lindsay Elizabeth Floyd Lindsay Elizabeth Floyd, 23, of Huntsville, Ala., formerly of Sparta, passed away Sept. 18, 2002, in Corinth, Miss.
