Obituary from Albany [MO] Ledger--Dead at 94 Years--James Parks, of Near New Castle,Answers
Summons After Almost a Century of Life.--James Parks, familiarly known as "Uncle Jimmy" Parks,
died at the home of his son, Merve, last Saturday February 14th, after an illness of about a week.
Up to the time he was taken with his last sickness he had been in remarkably good health for one
of his advanced years. About three days before the end came he suffered a stroke of paralysis,
and from that time his decline was rapid. His age was 94 years, 1 month and 2 days.
Funeral services were held Sunday, the 15th, at the Jones chapel, conducted by Rev. R.
H. Knisley, of the Pisgah Home, at Los Angeles California, who is conducting a meeting at that
place.
Mr. Parks was a quaint character, one who enjoyed life even to the end. He was a man of
remarkable vigor, and he attributed his good health to his exercise. Within the past few years he
made several trips to Albany, a distance of ten or twelve miles. He would start out in the morning
with a cane or staff in his hand, and with a peculiar stride of his own, begin his tramp towards town.
Sometimes he would make the entire distance to his daughter's, Mrs. J. T. Pratt, two miles
southeast of town, without eating or without assistance in any way. After resting a short time there,
sometimes over night, he would start into town to visit with his old time acquaintances here. He
had stopped in the Ledger office a number of times and would tell of his early days here, and recall
the names of many of the older citizens who have passed away. When he would pass up the street
and meet some citizen who had been here for many years he was in his element in talking of olden
times. In hs talks at this office his mind appeared clear and he could recall the incidents of the later
days as vividly as those of the early ones. He often stated that the long walks did not tire him very
much, and he attributed his longevity largely to his active life.
Mr. Parks was born in Indiana, January 20, 1820, and died February 14, 1914. He was
married to Miss Mary Ann Jacoby in Bourbon county, Kentucky, March 23, 1827, she died about
three years ago. To them were born eleven children, seven of whom are living, and were present at
the funeral. They are Mrs. Sarah Pratt of Albany; Mrs Fannie Akes, of McFall; Charles of Hastings,
Neb.; George, of McFall; Louis of Miller, Kansas; John of Osage City, Kansas; and Merve, of
McFall. Mr. Parks is also survived by 54 grandchildren, many of whom were present at the funeral.
Deceased moved to the vicinity of New Castle in the year of 1850, and for 64 years had
continued to live in that locality. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and kind neighbor, and
will be missed by many. But he had long since passed his allotted time on the earth, and was
finally gathered to his fathers.

county, Kentucky, March 23, 1827, her parents moving to Henry county [Kentucky] in the same
state when she was two years old. She was there married to James Parks Sept. 7, 1853. They
moved to Missouri in 1859[more likely 1849], and she had resided in this county up to the time of
her death, Sept. 14, 1910. Five sons and six daughters were born to them, and seven of these are

then carried the casket to the new made grave and all that was mortal of this time honored loving

From the Albany Capital, September 15, 1910--Aged Woman Dies. Mrs. John Parks, aged 86
years, died yesterday morning at her home ten miles southeast of Albany. The direct cause of her
death was inflammation of the bowels, the break-down of old age having weakened her so that she
was not able to rally from her disease. Mrs. Parks came from Kentucky at an early day, and had
been long a resident of Gentry county. She leaves her husband, who is 91 years old, and also a
